For a lot of small reasons, Van Morrison´s "Dweller on the Threshold" has been in my head these last couple of weeks. If you listen to the song- I think there is a definite sense of angst expressed, but at the same time it has an upbeat feel to it.
There have been a lot of little things falling into place that lead me to believe firstly that I´m in the right place here in NYC, and secondly that I am on the threshold of something potentially big. But I feel anxious because for just about two months now, I´ve been out here talking about all the things I´m going to do, and not much has really materialized yet.
On my birthday, I got a call confirming that I got a tutoring job that starts in Oct and coincides with the school year. It´s something- and it´s good for the kids.
I have been putting the first pieces together to start a new swing scene in Brooklyn at my Grandfather´s bar, Franklin Palace, which has stirred up a lot of positive feedback. Swing in NYC is a pretty big scene, most weeks there is a pretty good venue to dance four to five nights a week. But no joke, they are ALL in Manhattan. So I´ve found that the swing community is generally excited when I have mentioned the idea and have been very supportive concerning feedback and even promotion. So the first step was to find a follow to help me teach an introductory lesson before dj-ing the dance. And every time that Kate and I have gone to the bar to practice, the people get really excited- the email contact list gets a little longer every time we practice.
I think that we´ll probably get moving officially by late September. And in the spirit of home, we´ve decided to call it Brooklyn´s Jitterbugs Anonymous. (Shoutout to JA UNM- I miss filling our little room in Johnson gym with movement and laughter)
There isn´t any other major news in my life right now- I miss and love my friends and family. I miss the 505 for sunsets and camping. I´m just a dweller on the threshold- and I don´t want to wait no more...
I don´t want to jinx it yet, because like I said- we´ll see what materializes, but this week I´m going to Manhattan to see about registering "Speakeasy" Productions. More to come as news develops.
